After the asbestos truck crash, part of the Kwinana Freeway at Aubin Grove was shut down as broken asbestos sheets spill across the road before 10am of September 20, 2014.
A representative from the Department of Fire and Emergency Services explained that the old roofing sheets were most likely carried in a small skip-truck that rolled after a crash with a tow-truck. The load of asbestos sheets was believed to be from a building demolition.
The driver of the truck, suspected to have serious injuries, was brought to Royal Perth Hospital where he remains in a stable condition. On the other hand, motorists were also alerted by Main Roads about the delays and congestion after clean up operations that was conducted by a pollution response crew from the Department of Environmental Regulation. Officers also checked the crash site to verify if the asbestos spill was contained.
Fire crews in their hazmat suits picked up and moved the sheets off the road. As for larger pieces of asbestos sheeting, these were repacked in plastics.
